I know this is an old post, and you probably already have the answer!
Anyhow, this model is based on the Dinky Toys push along train. The Dinky toys model was based on the Hornby Dublo starter set 2001 model of 1963, which was made from plastic!
The Dublo model was pretty terrible, especially from a chassis point of view, so it is probably better to convert the metal Dinky model.
